Weekend for Staffs Seniors!
It was a pleasure to see our first team in action on Saturday with
what I considered to be an enthusiastic well led group of really
good players all capable of competing at that level of play.
I saw Abby play for the first time and win all 3 matches she played
– had Linzi not been injured she would have won her singles
against Lancashire Firsts which she almost managed on one leg !
And as to the final outcomes for both of our teams – simply
brilliant ! Congratulations to both sets of players on what is a
definitely good result for this season and in particular to Helen
and Ed as captains – very well done.
Just to let you know
that the 2nds had a fabulous weekend picking up lots of games, even
beating Derby 7-4. Big results mean we finish a very very respectable
mid-table, even without Linzi who the first team pinched for the
weekend!!!! If we'd have had her she'd have won all her games and
we would very likely finished runners up.
I think at the time of writing that the 1sts have just beaten Worcestershire
to send them down and the first survive! So a brilliant season really.

Junior Match ~ Streetly vs Lichfield
Though on average
younger and less experienced, the young players from Lichfield,
Holly, Amy, Will, Joe and Aiden, fought well last weekend
against a mixture of Warwickshire and Worcester county juniors
who represented the Streetly juniors.
In the end,
size and experience paid off. But the Lichfield team played
with great spirit and enthusiasm, plus good skills, to take
6 of the 14 singles matches. Could have been so easily reversed,
with many close matches going to Streetly, the closest by
28 points to 26! The 7 doubles matches, despite many close
games, all went to Streetly.
A very good
day enjoyed by all the players and supporters!
Junior Championships, Match Reports and Pictures
SSBA U18 Championships
was a wet and miserable day outside so we were glad to be
in the dry and warmth in Stafford for the U18 Championship.
The day started with the singles and was arranged with just
one group for the girls and one for the boys so everyone else
was due to play everyone else. Unfortunately James Duffy had
to withdraw through injury and Tom Lovatt through illness
– but we were still left with groups of 8 and 7.
The boys singles was keenly contested with Alfie James winning
the group and Max Walters finishing as runner up.
The girls singles proving possibly the most competitively
fought competition of the day – with the last game to
be played there were still 3 possible winners of the competition
– depending upon not just who won but on how many points
were scored by each player. Alisha Campbell winning her last
game meant she finishing as the group winner but with Bridie
Harding, Davina Patel and Charlotte Bradley all finishing
winning 5 games – counting back points meant the difference
between second and forth was just 6 points – with Bridie
taking the runners up trophy.
The boys doubles
became a straight final with Max Walters and Izaak Fairclough
beating Matt Eyton-Jones and James Yearsley.
The girls was
in a group format with Alisha Campbell and Tilly Taylor finishing
as winners and Davina Patel and Charlotte Bradley as runners
persuasive measures in recruiting players we had 6 pairs in
the mixed doubles – some enjoyable competitive games
resulted with Alisha Campbell and Alfie James finishing as
winners and Davina Patel and Max Walters as runners up.
Thanks to everyone
for helping before and after in getting everything out and
then putting everything back away again – for Mandy
for recruiting players and chasing money but especially all
the players for playing and making it a very enjoyable day
UNDER 16 HALF YEAR REPORT
v Staffordshire – 19 v 1
4 December 2016
We started the
under 16 season on 4 December 2016 away against Worcestershire.
As soon as we got there we knew it was going to be a difficult
match. Worcestershire’s top 3 girls had played the previous
week in the under 18’s match and beat our under 18 team.
With two new
girl team members who are both in the first year age group
and two Under 14 boys playing up in our team. We started off
in normal tradition with the mixed being played first however
Worcester’s pairings were too strong for us. In the
singles Worcester showed their strength throughout although
Sean Padley had a cracking game being extremely unlucky in
his second game (21-15, 21-19). The girls strength in the
Worcester team again showed through on the day. There were
some real good level doubles games with both Tom and Sean
having some good rallies and Mat and Ben fighting hard in
their second game. Alisha and Tilly Taylor started off well
in their first doubles but the 1st Worcester pairing came
out hard on the second game, their 2nd girls pairing match
registered Staffordshire’s only victory losing the first
12-21 but Alisha and Tilly Taylor winning the next two games
in 21-19, 21-19.
I would like
to say a special thanks to Ben Twigge and Sean Padley for
playing up in our team.
v Shropshire – 13 v 7
11 December 2016
With one of
Shropshire’s boys going to be a little late due to a
football match, we had agreed to start the day off with the
girls singles. Although we were level pegged after these matches
they had been well fought with Tilly Taylor playing extremely
well just losing 16-21, 24-26 and Tilly James taking hers
to three games the first 26-28, 21-19, 19-21 this game could
have very easily gone either way and was extremely unlucky
for Tilly James. Alisha and Grace Litherland-Clews both winning
their single games in two.
The mixed games
were played next, which we secured wins in 3 of the 4 games
this gave use a lead of 5 v 3.
Mat/Alisha, Ben/Tilly Taylor and Sean/Tilly James all winning
their mixed in two games.
Next on were
the boys singles games. Mat winning his in three games, Ben
winning his convincingly in two games, Tom missing out on
a close fought battle losing in three games, and Sean was
determined to win his in two games 21-12, 25-23 – Sean
was determined he wasn’t going to let this go to three
With the level
doubles coming next Mat and Ben took their first match in
two games and their second double pairings resulted in a hard
battle on their first game winning 22-20 but came out strongly
on the next game taking it in 21-10. Although Tom and Sean
lost to the second pairing they managed to take the first
pairing match to three games winning 21-12, 21-23, 21-18.
We managed to secure two of the girls doubles games giving
us a win overall.
v Nottinghamshire – 0 v 20
8 January 2017
We started in the traditional
format starting with the mixed but Nottingham showed they
had strength and depth within their team and took all four
mixed games. Mat and Alisha did play their second game much
better losing 11-21, 18-21.
The single games went a very
similar way to the mixed losing all games even though the
whole team tried extremely hard but we were just outclassed
All the level doubles were
won by Nottinghamshire in two games except for Alisha and
Tilly’s second pairing game going to three games which
unfortunately although they battled extremely hard they just
could not get the result they both really wanted.
A big thank you to Will Robinson
for stepping up to the under 16 team – especially in
a very difficult match.
I would like to thank everyone
for their help in setting up/clearing away, making drinks
etc. (especial thanks to Ben – Graces’ boyfriend
who brought the cups in today, helped with most of the chairs
and got the benches out – as they were the first to
arrive, then to top it off Ed gave him the scoring to do also
which he did a fantastic job at) I hope Grace brings him to
all the rest of the matches …
Thanks to the parents for
supporting the children on the day and to Ed for his coaching
skills and keeping the players happy with his “sparkling

U18 Catch-Up: from Under 18 Team Manager Tony Lovatt
The season started
on the 27/11/16 with 2 matches in Worcester against Worcestershire
and Warwickshire. This was a first shires league match for 3 of
the Staffs players and only the second for one other and with all
the Staffs players being first year U18’s it was always going
to be a tough couple of games. Warwickshire were up first in the
The traditional start of the mixed games showed the strength
and experience of the Warwickshire pairings who proved too
strong for the 4 new pairings of Staffs with Staffs losing
all 4 games. The individual strengths of the Warwickshire
team was apparent again in the singles with just Alfie managing
to record a victory in his hard fought match.
The level doubles produced some very keenly fought games but
with Warwickshire coming out top on all the games meaning
Staffs were unable to add to their games total- resulting
in a 19-1 loss.
huddling under blankets during the lunch break in attempts
to keep warm and the potential of an early start to the afternoon
lost with Worcestershire having arranged to play different
players in afternoon match who were not arriving until much
later – everyone settled in to watch Mindula’s
dad take on Charlotte’s – an epic battled resulted…..
When play did
start again in the afternoon - Worcestershire proved to be
another tough opponent – the now slightly more experienced
pairing from Staffs again had some really hard fought games
but unfortunately all 4 mixed were lost – the singles
produced a very similar result to the morning’s games
with just Alfie managing to record a victory, but both Max
and James managing to take their games into a third. The level
doubles seemed to be going the same way as well – until
Alisha and Mindula, in the last match on court on the day
secured a second game for staffs – a 18-2 loss.
A big thank to everyone on the day – Mandy for scorekeeping,
for the homemade rockyroads, Nescafe for the warmth but especially
all of the players for giving it their all – over a
long cold day.
The team: Alisha Campbell, Mindula Illeperuma, Sinali Gunarathne
and Charlotte Bradley, Alfie James, Tom Lovatt, Max Walters
and James Duffy
Next up was a home
game on the 18/12/16 against Lancashire II. Because of traffic problems
experienced with some of the Lancs players on the way down the match
started with all of the girls singles and with good wins for Harini,
Alisha and Davina we were 3-1 up, the boys singles was a reversal,
Max going very close but just James winning – 4-4.
Next was the mixed and following good wins for Alfie and Harini,
James and Alisha and Max and Davina saw Staffs with a narrow 7-5
lead. The first of the level doubles games were shared with Max
and James winning one of the boys and Harini and Alisha one of the
girls – 9-7 – the reverse doubles saw Alfie and Tom
win there’s and then Harini and Alisha winning another to
secure Staffs an 11-9 victory.
The team: Harini Ratnayake, Mindula Illeperuma, Alisha Campbell
and Davina Patel, Alfie James, Tom Lovatt, Max Walters and James
Duffy As ever a big thanks to everyone – Mandy our resident
scorekeeper, everyone for helping on the day but especially the
players for playing – a big thanks for 2016 – let’s
hope 2017 is a good one

Eddy 1936 - 2016 (Letter from Dave Eddy)
This is to let you
know that my brother Ian Eddy (80) died last night March 1st. in
Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham.
He had been in and out of hospital for the past 12M but collapsed
on sunday, having developed an infection and never recovered. I
was with him in hospital until near the end which came quickly -
a blessing after all his troubles over the last 40 years.
Ian played many times for the County mainly during the 1960s - starting
in the 2nd team with my sister Sheila for a short while before she
married and moved away. Then into the First Team when he mostly
partnered John Baylay and sometimes Jack McColl. On the occasion
of my first appearance for the First Team (played 3 lost 3 !) against
Derbyshire I well remember Ian scoring a famous victory at Cheddleton
over Trevor Coates, England No 1.
We played in tournaments together and on another famous occasion
at the Northern Championships beat John and Bill Havers, both full
Ian himself was a successful tournament player and was mainly responsible
for mentoring and supporting me such that without his help I would
never have reached International level.
He was a very good cricketer representing Staffordshire A at 15
and having trials with Warks and Worcs. He was also a good golfer
but his other main sport was Tennis where he represented Staffordshire
First Team on a number of occasions and was a County Champion several
I will be able to publicise the funeral arrangements in due course.

saw the U15’s back in action
– this time with an away match against Derbyshire – with
both Abby (international duty in Russia) & Harshini (on holiday)
away, Sinali made a very welcome and appreciated debut for the team.
The normal mixed started the day and it was obvious from the start
that this was going to be a close match..…in spite of some very
tough closely fought battles only Shauna & Alfie emerged victorious
– we were 3-1 down
Next it was the 1&2 singles – Alfie, playing a player with
a higher grading, taking a really good win – Shauna not to be
outdone did likewise – David found himself up against a very
tough opponent and lost & Mindula hung on for a great victory
in 3 – all square at 4-4
Next up was the 3&4 singles – Rueben and Tom found the next
Derbyshire lads tough opponents both going down in 2, Alisha, on a
mission, put a spirted performance in winning her match, Sinali then
took her singles to the third but sadly lost – 7-5 down.
The start of the level doubles – Alfie & Tom up against
the Derbyshire 1st lads losing a very close game, David & Rueben
against the 2nd’s battling hard but also losing out, Shauna
& Mindula against the Derbyshire 1st’s girls winning well
and then with Alisha and Sinali also winning their game against the
2nd’s – 9-7 down
The return doubles – Alfie & Tom winning, David & Rueben
losing, Shauna & Mindula winning it was all down to the last game
on court with Alisha & Sinali losing out to the 1st Derbyshire
girls giving Derbyshire an 11-9 victory
As ever – many thanks to everyone for playing – parents
for taxiing & support – Mandy for scorekeeping.

15 Staffs team verses Lancashire 2
Last Sunday saw the
U15 return to action after the Christmas break with a visit to Leigh
to play Lancs II. The match started in the familiar format of the
mixed games. Alfie & Shauna and Rueben & Alisha getting
good wins in 2 and Tom & Harshini winning theirs in 3 with David
& Mindula just losing in their game in the 3rd saw us finish
the mixed 3-1 up.
The singles were all tight games with boys splitting theirs with
Alfie and David getting good wins and Alisha winning for the girls
it was now 6-6 with just the level doubles to play
The girls split their doubles with both Alisha & Harshini and
Shauna & Mindula winning one each and with Alfie & Tom and
David & Rueben both winning both of their games a 12-8 victory
was secured Many thanks to all as ever for playing, supporting,

match that was played in a great spirit by both teams.
