Summary of Dave’s Major Achievements
(by Barbara and Eddy Sutton
You may or may not be aware that Dave Eddy has chosen today’s match to be his last for the County , and he has decided to officially retire from Staffordshire badminton.
Normally Peter Blake, our County Chairman, would have liked to have been here, but unfortunately he has had a longstanding prior engagement, and sends his sincere apologies and best wishes.
We did try to find out how many times Dave has represented Staffordshire, but it seems records don’t go back that far!!!! We think he started playing for Staffordshire in 1960, so that means he has been playing for Staffs for 53 years! I can’t understand really why he’s stopping so early!!!! Seriously though, a tremendous milestone which is very unlikely to be matched in the future.
As a Staffordshire and world class badminton player, his numerous achievements have included:-
* Representing his country on 58 occasions.
* Winning 4 National titles.
* Being runner up on two occasions in the mens doubles at the All-England.
* Winning gold and bronze medals in the Commonwealth Games.
* Winning the European championships twice, once in the mixed and once in the mens doubles.
I know that there are two special wins in his career, one being the Danish Open mens doubles in 1975. The reason this was so special was because it was the first time an English pairing had won the event since the 1938. If I remember rightly, I was playing quite well that day!
The other occasion was his crowning glory – winning an All-England mixed title with Sue Whetnall. FANTASTIC!!!
Of course, alongside all these other achievements he has won numerous International events.
Apart from his playing prowess, Dave has given up a great deal of his time to the promotion and running of the Staffordshire County Badminton Association, as well as working at National level. He has also spent a lot of time encouraging and coaching younger players.
He can certainly look back with pride at what he has achieved and the time he has devoted to the County, and he will be sorely missed. However, I’m certain he won’t be hanging up his rackets for good and I would like you all to join me in wishing Dave all the very best for the future.
On behalf of Staffordshire Badminton Association, I would like to present Dave with these champagne glasses as a thank you for your fantastic work. Could you all please put your hands together as a sign of our appreciation. Very well done Dave!
